Relatively high chance of getting hemorrhoids during pregnancy

Getting hemorrhoids during pregnancy is not uncommon, and many women suffer the discomfort and irritation associated with such conditions.

Not only is the female body changing in shape to accommodate the baby as the fetus is growing daily, but hormone levels also become variable.

It is mainly the growth of the fetus, which causes hemorrhoids during pregnancy as, as it grows, it exerts pressure on the colon and rectum. Pressure on the colon restricts blood from the veins leading to varicosis, which weakens the rectal vein walls and swelling of veins and, consequently, hemorrhoids.

Increases in the hormone progesterone and an increase in blood flows during pregnancy can also contribute to the development of hemorrhoids, as this relaxes the walls of veins, making them more prone to swelling.

Ways to decrease the risk of having hemorrhoids during pregnancy

Pregnant women can take certain steps to reduce the chances of having hemorrhoids, and these include:

  • Drinking plenty of fluids, up to 10 8-ounce glasses of water each day;
  • Avoid sitting or standing for extended periods by getting up and walking around for a few minutes every hour;
  • Resting correctly on the side when reading or watching TV to relieve downward pressure on the rectal veins;
  • Eating plenty of fibre-rich foods such as vegetables such as broccoli, artichokes, and Brussels sprouts; fruits like pears, avocados, and berries; and whole
  • grains such as brown rice, quinoa, and oatmeal; legumes including various kinds of beans, lentils, and green peas; and don’t forget nuts and seeds;
  • Going to the toilet as soon as the need is felt;
  • Doing exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles that help support your rectum and can improve circulation in the rectal area.
