Anal Skin Tag Symptoms

Hemorrhoids are an increasingly common ailment that tends to appear with age. Indeed, they are most prevalent amongst adults between the ages of 45-65 years old. Some estimates suggest that around 5% of all seniors suffer from hemorrhoids at one time or another.

The primary cause of hemorrhoids is constipation or difficulty in completely evacuating the bowel during motions. Hemorrhoids occur on an increasingly common basis as people age and are due to straining while on the toilet, which, in turn, puts pressure on the veins in the rectal area, causing such veins to enlarge. Heredity may also play a role in developing hemorrhoids, as can obesity and diseases of the liver.

Constipation can be a combination of three situations:

  • Infrequent bowel movements of less than three times per week with decreased elasticity of the anal venous vessels leading to blood stasis;
  • Difficult bowel movement with feeling of incomplete evacuation; and
  • Dry and hard stools indirectly injure the anal muscle, leading to inflammation and increasing the extent of blood stasis.

Internal hemorrhoids are often painless unless they protrude outside the anus. If they do protrude, they can develop blood clots, which are painful but not dangerous.

Ways to reduce the risk of having hemorrhoids

Typically, people who eat a low fibre diet and lead a sedentary lifestyle are especially prone to hemorrhoids, as this often leads to chronic constipation.

Treatment of internal hemorrhoids should, therefore, start with changes to an individual’s lifestyle. If you already have hemorrhoids or want to reduce the chances of getting them as you age, it is wise to review and change your diet and ensure that you intake enough high-fibre foods such as vegetables and whole grains.

Your fluid intake should also be increased to help liquidate constipation to normalize bowel movements. Finally, you should endeavour to undertake a regular exercise regime appropriate for your age and physical condition.

It is best to deal with the hemorrhoids early on through proper treatment to expedite healing from hemorrhoids and limit a patient’s suffering. More challenging cases also require external treatment to both alleviate symptoms and promote healing.
