What Are Anal Fissures?

Anal fissures are small cracks, cut, or tear in the anus. They can be extremely painful and are usually diagnosed by bright red blood in the stool and bleeding immediately after bowel movements. While anal fissures can be incredibly painful, the condition is not serious, and they will often heal on their own within 6 weeks.

Anal fissures are quite common. They can affect men and women of all ages.

Treatments can alleviate pain and discomfort while anal fissures heal, though cases that persist for upwards of 2 months will require medical attention. An anal fissure is easily diagnosed by visual inspection or gentle examination using the tip of the finger.

This condition can often be recurring, and people who have suffered from anal fissures are more likely to develop them again, especially when not treated properly. Furthermore, in some cases, anal fissures can extend to the surrounding muscle tissue, causing further complications.

At N.A. Hemorrhoids Centre, we are equipped to treat patients with anal fissures.

Anal Fissures Symptoms

Due to the heightened concentration of nerves in the tissue of the anus, any slight tear or injury will give rise to intense pain. Pain is particularly noticeable during bowel movements and tends to be accompanied by bleeding. Anal fissures also carry with them some other notable symptoms:

  • Sharp pain during and after bowel movements that can last several hours
  • Bright red blood in the stool and or on toilet paper after use
  • A burning sensation around the anus
  • A small lump of skin near the anus
  • A crack or tear in the skin around the anus
  • Itching in the anal region
  • Constipation
  • Frequent urination or discomfort when urinating

While anal fissures can heal over time and symptoms can go away on their own, you should seek treatment at our clinic if your symptoms persist for eight weeks or more.

What Causes Anal Fissures?

Most commonly, anal fissures are caused by passing stiff or substantial stools. They often occur because of the continued strain on the anus when suffering from diarrhea or constipation. Other forms of trauma to the anus may cause anal fissures.

Though anal fissures affect people of all ages, some groups are at more risk than others. Anal fissures frequently occur in infants and younger children simply because they tend to have more difficulty with constipation. Older individuals may experience anal fissures due to reduced blood flow to the area. The condition is also very likely to arise in women going through childbirth due to its strain on the body.

Other factors can increase the risk of developing anal fissures, including inflammatory diseases such as Chron’s disease, tuberculosis, sexually transmitted infections such as HIV and syphilis, engaging in anal intercourse, or the insertion of foreign objects into the anus.

Some simple steps can be taken to prevent developing anal fissures. Maintaining high levels of fibre in your diet by eating more fibrous foods such as vegetables and fruits will reduce the risk of constipation, which is one of the leading causes of the condition. Drinking more fluid and getting more exercise throughout the day will also lessen the strain of bowel movements.

If these lifestyle changes fail to alleviate constipation and the discomfort associated with anal fissures, you may prefer to use over-the-counter stool softeners.

While constipation and trauma are the most common causes of anal fissures, there are other potential causes. These include poor bowel habits, overly tight sphincter muscles or pre-existing scarring in the anorectal area.

Our Treatment Program

We have years of experience in treating anal fissures at our clinic and can help alleviate your symptoms quickly and effectively. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of anal fissures, don’t hesitate to get in touch and see how we can help you.

The main treatment programs we offer are our Guoyi Proctology Therapy and our Microsurgery & Naturopathic Treatment.

Guoyi Proctology Therapy

Our BAZHISAN treatment is an herbal ointment combined with Naturopathic Treatment. BAZHISAN soothes pain, stops bleeding, and closes wounds to aid healing. The treatment eradicates symptoms by restricting blood flow to the region where it is applied, reducing swelling, and facilitating faster recovery.

Microsurgery & Naturopathic Treatment

For severe cases, we combine naturopathic treatment with microsurgery. Microsurgery is commonly used for persistent or more severe cases of anal fissures that may have complications. In cases where anal fissures are painful and not healing on their own, microsurgery is an effective treatment method.

When To Seek Treatment for Hemorrhoids

You should seek treatment if you experience any pain or discomfort in the area around your anus. Experiencing any of these symptoms while having a bowel movement is an increasing cause for concern.

If you notice any swelling or lumps near your anus, particularly with blue discolouration in the area, seek medical attention immediately. Any sort of burning sensation or extreme itching should also be brought to the attention of a medical professional without delay.

Our Treatment Program

Guoyi Proctology Therapy
Our BAZHISAN treatment is an herbal ointment combined with Naturopathic Treatment. BAZHISAN soothes pain, stops bleeding, and closes wounds to aid healing. The treatment eradicates symptoms by quickly restricting blood flow to the hemorrhoids, allowing them to detach naturally.
Microsurgery & Naturopathic Treatment

For severe cases, we combine naturopathic treatment with microsurgery. This is particularly effective for prolapsed hemorrhoids and those with complications. In cases where hemorrhoids have become painful and swollen and the veins around the anus have become inflamed, microsurgery is an effective method of treatment.
